Foundation Highlights <<BACK

The City of Sunrise Foundation has been hard at work throughout the past year, raising funds for and awareness of non-profit organizations in the community. Our events have included:

“Pick-A-Prize” Drawing
In January 2009, the Foundation held a pick-a-prize raffle at the BankAtlantic Center, with packages valued at a total of nearly $6,500. All prizes were donated, and all proceeds benefitted the Aging &  Disability Resource Center of Broward County, and Family Central, Inc.

Beatles Tribute Concert
The Foundation hosted a benefit concert in January 2009 at the Sunrise Civic Center Theatre. The standing-room-only crowd was treated to a performance by The Beatles Remembered – a tribute band that looks and sounds just like the Fab Four.

Grant Awards

In April 2009, the Foundation’s Board of Directors met to discuss 41 applications for funding. A total of $140,000 was allocated to local not-for-profit agencies, including Daily Bread Food Bank, Kids in Distress, Coalition to End Homelessness, ARC Broward, and Senior Volunteer Services.

2009 Cocktail Reception

In June 2009, the City of Sunrise Foundation celebrated its first anniversary with a Cocktail Reception & Silent Auction in the Grand Ballroom of the Sunrise Civic Center.

July 4th Celebration at the BankAtlantic Center

In celebration of Independence Day, volunteers sold spirit bracelets at this community-wide event - with all proceeds benefitting the Foundation.

"Summer Staycation" Drawing

In July 2009, participants entered to win one of four fabulous nearby getaways. All prizes were donated, and all proceeds benefitted the Foundation.

“Dining Dozen” Drawing

In August 2009, one lucky winner received a $50 gift certificate to each of 12 South Florida restaurants – for a total of $600 in memorable dining experiences.

Word Up! Poetry Slam

In October 2009, student poets delivered inspirational and original works that focused on such topics as education, charity and empowerment. Sherrika Mitchell of Piper High School took first prize.

Fables and Fairytales: Storytelling by Jim Weiss
In November 2009, the Foundation hosted a performance by one of America’s favorite storytellers. Children attended in their pajamas, and cookies and milk were served. This event was made possible by a donation from IKEA Sunrise, and presented with the support of Kumon Learning Center - Plantation, Monkey Joe’s, Panera Bread, Publix and Sam’s Club.

Holiday Bowl

In December 2009, Strikers Family Sports Center hosted a Foundation fundraiser attended by City of Sunrise staff. The best team won bragging rights – and the gutterball champ walked away with a trophy.

Thank you for participating in our efforts to improve the quality of life of Broward County residents.
